Come celebrate 50 years of the metro on Car-Free Sunday!

That’s right, the metro is celebrating its birthday this year! And after 50 years, there is plenty to show and plenty of stories to tell. To mark this special anniversary, STIB and Brussels Mobility have put together a packed programme of fun and educational activities across the capital. So leave your car in the garage and come celebrate with us!

During Mobility Week, a different activity awaits you every day across the network: music, street art, treats, quizzes, guided tours exploring art in the metro, collectibles and more… A great opportunity to rediscover the metro from every angle.

The metro tells its story in pictures

Throughout September, the metro also tells its story through images. Exhibitions in several Brussels stations will take you through the history of the metro, its vehicles, stations and depots, as well as the role of art throughout the network.

Behind the scenes, for one weekend

On 19 and 20 September, Brussels Mobility will also take you behind the scenes of the metro stations with guided tours organised as part of Heritage Days. It’s a chance to see these familiar places from a new perspective – places you may pass through every day without really stopping to look.

The grand finale : open doors at the Jacques Brel depot

And on Sunday 20 September, it’s time for the grand finale! For Car-Free Sunday, STIB is exceptionally opening the doors of the Jacques Brel depot in Anderlecht. Discover what goes on behind the scenes of metro and bus operations, meet the people who keep the network running, take a seat at the controls of a metro train and explore the technologies shaping the mobility of tomorrow. And for a little trip back in time, a vintage bus will also be there!

Meet us at the Mobility Village

Meanwhile, Brussels Mobility will welcome you to the Mobility Village on Place des Palais, with a big quiz celebrating 50 years of the metro, a bicycle repair point and a range of activities raising awareness about mobility and road safety.

50 years of the metro calls for a celebration. And you’re invited!
