Walking

Personal bike

After walking, a bike is the most economical form of transport. Once the bike has been purchased, the costs of a journey are very limited, although it’s important not to forget any later maintenance and equipment expenses.

If you choose a bike as your main means of transport, here’s a tip: start by getting advice from specialists. Several associations that promote bikes and protect consumers have looked at this issue and they will be able to guide you on your choice.

Shared bike

Bikesharing is organised in the same way as carsharing:

Station-based: you collect your bike and have to take it to the station. But unlike carsharing, the bikes do not have to be returned to the same station. You should find out more from the operator.

Traditional and electric bikes:

  • Blue Bike: from 3.50 € for 24h
  • Villo!: ticket 1 day 1.50 € / subscription 1 month 3.50 €*

* First half-hour is free, then after the free period: 2nd extra half-hour for 0.50 €, 3rd half-hour for 1 € and the next half-hours for 2 € per half-hour

Cargos bikes:

  • Monkey Donkey: 3.50 € / hour (1.75 € for the first half-hour). Day rates are also available at 25 € (24h) and 40 € (48h).
  • Cambio: 3.50 € / hour

Free-floating: you find a bike or e-scooter via your app, make your journey and once at your destination, you can leave it in a public space in the zone fixed by the operator. With this system, you pay to unlock your vehicle, then the minutes of use.

Public transport

The STIB-MIVB brings together the Brussels network of trams, buses and metros. It offers a wide range of subscriptions at reduced rates, notably:

  • For under-12s (Brussels residents or not): free
  • For 12 – 24 year-olds (Brussels residents): 12 € / year
  • For people 65+: 12 € / year
  • For people 65+ (not living in Brussels): 60 € / year
  • For people who benefit from a social tariff: free
  • STIB-MIVB 75 trips: 123 € / year
  • School tickets subscription: 12 € / year (and free if this applies to 3 members of a family)

The SNCB links 35 stations in Brussels and enables users to travel within a surrounding perimeter of 30 km at reduced tariffs.

It also offers travel tickets at lower prices:

  • Weekend Ticket: 50% discount on travel from Friday evening, until Sunday included (for everyone)
  • Discovery Ticket: 50% discount on your return travel for a visit to an attraction or participation in an event with partners of SNCB (e.g. Pairi Daiza, Plopsaland De Panne, Antwerp Zoo, etc.)
  • Standard Multi: 10 unassigned journeys for 102 € anywhere in Belgium (99 € on the App)
  • Local Multi: 10 journeys for 31 € for short journeys
  • Senior Ticket: 8.30 € for a return journey on the same day throughout Belgium, from the age of 65
  • Flex Season Ticket: flexible and reduced cost train pass to travel 2 to 3 days a week on the same route
  • Kids Ticket: 50% off the ticket price if the child is travelling alone, or if you are travelling with more than 4 children (under 12)
  • Youth Ticket: 7.50 € / journey for youngsters under 26
  • Group Ticket: discount for all the group from 15 people (1 € / child under 12 and 60% for the other travellers)

Did you know? There are two tariffs called Brupass and Brupass XL that enable you to travel at a lower cost with the 4 operators present in Brussels (SNCB, STIB, De Lijn and TEC).

Shared car

Carsharing means making the most of a shared car for your personal journeys wherever you want and whenever you want. There are 3 systems:

Station based: you reserve a vehicle in advance, make your journey and finally return the vehicle to the departure station.

Cambio

Free floating: you pick a vehicle via your app, make your journey and once at your destination, you can leave it in any public parking space, in the zone fixed by the operator.

Getaround - Miles - Poppy

Between private individuals: you can decide to rent a car from an individual or make your car available for renting. Share with your friends, neighbours and even some companies!

Taxis

From time to time, you may need to use a taxi or a passenger car with driver. Brussels has several operators.

Did you know? The Collecto service is back and in style! It enables you to move around 7/7 between 23.00 and 06.00 for only 6 €, using one of the 200 boarding points located at STIB-MIVB stops. You then go to your chosen address.

 

Allowances

Bruxell’Air allowance

If you live in the Brussels-Capital region and you cancel your car number plate, you will receive the Bruxell’Air allowance, which you can request via the Irisbox form.

This allowance entitles you to a budget of 505 €, 705 € or 1,010 € to be used for alternative forms of mobility for you or members of your household, for a maximum period of two years. The sum is determined according to your revenue and the composition of your household. Discover all the terms and conditions.

Borough allowances

You can combine this regional allowance with borough financial aid if you live in Etterbeek(additional to the Bruxell’Air allowance) and Woluwe Saint Pierre (benefit for use of carsharing and an allowance to buy a cargo bike).

Bike allowances

You also benefit from an allowance to buy an electric bike in the boroughs of Berchem Saint Agathe; Ganshoren; Schaerbeek; Uccle; Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.

What about professionals?

Brussels Economy and Employment has an allowance that can cover up to 70% of your investments when buying a cargo bike for your company.
